Everything You Need to Decide, in One Place

One Question, One Short, One Straight Answer

Fees, approvals, EMI, exams — each video answers one thing students actually search for, and links to the full guide.

From Confused to Convocation: 4 Checkpoints

Most students pick the university first and check approval last. Flip it — scroll down and watch the path.

  1. Check approval, programme-wise

A university being recognised isn't the same as your programme being approved for online mode in your session. Look up both.

    Open the UGC-DEB verifier →
  2. Do the fee maths

Ask for the full programme fee, not just the first-semester amount — then see what the monthly number looks like.

    See the fee ladder ↓
  3. Compare three, not thirty

Shortlist three universities and put exam mode, NAAC, EMI and placements side by side. Decision fatigue is real.

    Start comparing →
  4. Know your exam mode, then apply

Remote-proctored from home, or pen-and-paper at a study centre? It changes your semester plans. Check it before you pay.

What Do Online Degrees Really Cost? The Fee Ladder

We lined up every Online MBA on this site from cheapest to costliest: ₹62,000 – ₹2,10,000 across 23 universities. Pick a degree to see where each one sits.

The cheapest isn't automatically the best deal, and the costliest isn't automatically the best brand. The pricier programmes tend to advertise live masterclasses, case-study libraries or mentoring; the budget ones lean on self-study and, in IGNOU's case, pen-and-paper exams at study centres. Open any row to see what the extra rupees actually buy — then run the EMI calculator below.

Fees are as listed on each university's page on this site (total programme fee). Confirm the latest figure on the official admission portal before paying.

Same Degree Level, Three Very Different Ways to Study

UGC regulations give approved online and ODL degrees the same standing as regular degrees. Individual employers and exams can still look at details, so check the notification of the job or exam you're aiming for.

UGC-DEB, NAAC and NIRF: Three Terms, Three Different Jobs

Every university page throws all three at you. Only one of them decides whether your online degree is valid.

The one that matters most

UGC-DEB

The Distance Education Bureau of the UGC says whether a university may offer a specific programme in online or distance mode for a given session. If this is missing, nothing else on the brochure rescues the degree.

Ask:Is this programme approved for this session?
Quality grade

NAAC

A grade (A++, A+, A…) and a score out of 4 for overall quality. UGC's online-education rules use a minimum NAAC score — or a top-100 NIRF rank — as a threshold for starting online programmes, and institutions just below it can apply for approval. Those rules have been amended since 2020, so confirm the current criteria on the DEB portal.

Ask:Is the grade current, and is the score listed?
A ranking, not a licence

NIRF

A government ranking of institutions. It's a helpful signal, but a rank is not an approval, and it describes the university overall — not its online programme specifically.

Ask:Which category and year is this rank from?

Rule of thumb: approval first, grade second, rank last. You can check any university on our UGC-DEB verifier, and see all three numbers side by side for up to three universities in Compare.

How to Spot a Fake University Before You Pay

UGC publishes a list of fake universities every few months. Scammers don't wait for it — these are the patterns to watch for.

1
The name is almost a real oneOne word added, one word changed. Always match the exact name against UGC's list, not the brochure's spelling.
2
Fees go to a personal accountGenuine universities collect fees in an institutional account. Be wary of a personal UPI ID or a "send it to our agent" request.
3
"Degree in 6 months" promisesSkipped years, "direct second-year entry", or credit for work experience in place of study — recognised degrees don't work this way.
4
A generic "UGC Approved" badgeApproval is per programme and per session. A logo with no programme name or session is not proof.
5
Pressure to pay today"Seats closing tonight" or a discount that vanishes at midnight. Real admission windows are published and can be checked.
6
A website you only found via WhatsAppOpen the university's site from its listing on UGC's page, not from a link someone forwarded.

Run any university through the verifier → It checks the name against UGC's fake-university and online-entitled lists.

Questions Students Ask Us Most

What is UGC-DEB approval and why does it matter for an online degree?

UGC-DEB (Distance Education Bureau) approval is what makes an online degree from an Indian university legally equivalent to a regular on-campus degree for jobs, higher education and most government eligibility. Always verify current-session approval for your exact program before paying any fee.

How much does an online MBA cost in India in 2026?

A UGC-DEB approved online MBA in India typically costs between ₹50,000 and ₹2,50,000 for the full program, depending on the university and specialization, with 0% EMI options available at most approved universities.

Is UniversityJano's counselling and comparison service free?

Yes. Comparing universities, checking UGC-DEB approval, using the fee and ROI calculators, and getting 1-on-1 expert counselling on UniversityJano.com are all completely free for students.

Do employers in India accept online degrees?

Yes, most Indian employers now accept UGC-DEB approved online degrees at par with regular degrees, since they carry the same legal recognition. Employer perception can still vary by industry and individual company.

What is the difference between online, distance and regular degrees?

Regular means classroom study on campus. Online means you study through a learning portal with live and recorded lectures, and most exams are proctored from home. Distance (ODL) is self-paced study with printed or digital material, and exams are often held at study centres. Approved online and distance degrees carry the same standing as regular ones under UGC regulations, but check the notification of any specific job or exam you are aiming for.

How do I check whether a university is fake?

Match the exact university name against UGC's list of fake universities, confirm that your programme is approved for online or distance mode in your admission session on the UGC-DEB portal, and pay fees only to the university's official account. The UniversityJano UGC-DEB verifier checks a name against UGC's fake-university and online-entitled lists.
